4:20 DAY

"Constant Togetherness is fine - but only for Siamese twins"
- Victoria Billings

Considering Darren and I aren't physically joined at the hip, chin, elbow or any other body part and we don't share any internal organs, Darren decided that he would up and leave his home office this week and make the Caltrain commute to the company's headquarters in Sunnyvale. This action was done for no other reason than to escape me, Little Ol' Me.

For reasons that will become clear, I was not able to get out much earlier this week.

However, the previous week all was good. A tourist trip to the San Francisco Zoo was a highlight for the week. As far as zoos go it was pretty nice. It didn't knock Perth Zoo off the top of my personal favourite's list but it was an enjoyable day and accomplished to cross it off my 'things to see and do' list.
I reminisced listening to the young girl at the giraffe enclosure excitedly telling her mum, "Mummy when I grow up, I am going to work at the zoo."

I had the dream but sadly never made any zoological gardens payroll, but I have worked with my fair share of monkey's over time and I recall my mum telling me to clean my pig sty of a room on a number of occasions, all in a day's work for a keeper.

Disclaimer: Context of “Monkeys” generally refers to sales account managers who have submitted employee expense claims to me over the years. No close department colleagues come under this category.Talking about monkeys, Darren and I enjoyed some stand up comedy on Friday night at a seedy looking underground comedy club on the outskirts of the Tenderloin. 'Comedy for the price of a movie ticket' was the attraction. For $10 entry fee we were fed unlimited bowls of pretzels, drank cheap Chardonnay in plastic tumblers from the bar and were entertained by five very funny up and coming stand up comedians.

With the audience dominated by couples, seemingly happy holidaying couples and hooking up on first date couples, one comedian decided to turn relationship therapist and intervene on our happy union... To his watchful eye the distance between our seating arrangements concerned him. We let him have his laugh and get his audience giggle at our expense. If only they knew how much quality time we shared together, they would understand why we didn't feel the need to be sitting on each other's laps.

The date also provided some material for the jokers on stage, being 20th April. Ignoring the fact that it was Hitler's birthday, little did we know that this day has long been known in Northern California as 4:20 day (pronounced four-twenty)... Unofficial National Weed Smoking Day. This was all unbeknown to us, having never embraced the cannabis culture.
Q. Is this day recognised by the Pot Smoking Community in Australia?

Saturday, Darren and I took our Zipcar to the states capital of Sacramento (pop 407,000). Lonely Planets introductory paragraph states, “The city of politicians, lobbyists and a beefy governor with an odd, orange-hued tan who commutes from Los Angeles."
It was pretty clear why Mr Schwarzenegger would choose to commute rather than reside in the State's Capital.

However, the first four blocks on the west-side of downtown (Front, Second, Third and Fourth) are known as "Old Sacramento", a State historical area. It has wooden sidewalks, gold-rush era storefronts, cobblestone streets, it was definitely worth a visit. The frozen cheesecake on a stick dipped in melted chocolate was a definite highlight. "Heaven"

Since ancient times Sunday's have long been considered the day of rest. No point living in the past though is there....so after my introductory ride the previous weekend on my brand new Walmart Bicycle we decided to raise the bar.. significantly.

Sausalito (pop. 7330) was our destination on this lovely Sunday morning.

The Sausalito Chamber of Commerce boasts, " Sausalito is a charming waterfront community that lies across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Because of its Mediterranean flair and breathtaking views, it is often compared to the French Riviera.
Today, you can stroll along the water and watch the sea lions cavort, rest in the plaza and listen to the splashing fountain, soak up the ambiance in the many open air cafes, browse through the unique boutiques, and check out the marinas."

A ride from home, over the Golden Gate Bridge and down the hill to Sausalito is considered a big feat for a beginner like myself. The decision to abort the planned ferry ride home and cycle the uphill return trip home may be considered just plain moronic.

So 30 Kilometres and a number of steep slopes later we arrived home, where I then stayed for the next few days.

Check out the satellite mapping of our ride.

The outcome of this enjoyable 30Km leisurely rides was:

1) The reason I didn't do much this week. Without a wheelchair a person that can't walk generally is unable to go anywhere.
2) There was no blog writing and consumption of wine on Sunday evening, just outpouring of 'whine' and lots of it.
3) In summary the reason Darren chose to escape the comforts of his corner office for the joys of public transport commutes to hang out with his boss. I think the expression was, "You have been a bit of a downer the last few days."

Well, it's now Friday again and a new weekend is upon us. Strangely enough I am eager to go for another peddle. We will have to do that on Sunday, we have to make sure I can walk for our BBC London interview tomorrow afternoon. hehehehe more on that next week.

ZOMBIES NEEDED

"So Darren, what's Mel doing today? Writing her blog that no one reads?"

Hey!!!! Blog writing is not my weekday 9-5 shift. Blog time is my special Sunday evening pastime; couch, laptop, glass of wine and The Apprentice LA in
the background.

OMG
!! Maybe I do need to mix it up, perhaps I need a Wednesday afternoon entry, written at Sta
rbucks with a fratte latte, just to spice it up a little.
Have I become the text book stereotype of a blogger? Number 3 below concerns me greatly...I don't want to become depressed.

blog (bläg) n. [short for Web log] 1. a website that accommodates easy and frequent posting on any topic; 2. an online platform for personal anecdotes, criticism and discussion, often featuring links to other websites; 3. an outlet for obsessive personalities, depressives and alcoholics.

It is nice to be sitting on the cushioned couch, I am a tad sore.
Darren made a big mistake today...Oh Sirree!!!! What was he thinking.
Everyone needs their time out. We have always favoured independence in our relationship and the chance to spend quality time either with independent friends or alone. Now considering we currently don't have any friends, we rely on our time alone to stop us from driving each other a tad batty. I have shops and neighbourhoods to explore and Darren has special ride time to go out on his bike and explore the countryside.

Today was a big day, I got a bike (my reason for being a tad sore). Could I now invade Darren's one chance of solitude and personal discovery?
I was quite excited about the purchase, it's been along time, since primary school. Back then I had a 10 speed bike that Matt (brother) decided to sell in a garage sale after I made the mistake of not removing it from the garage during the sale. (Don't feel guilty about that though Matt), the timing of the garage sale coincided with the compulsory introduction of the yellow stack hat. I would never have ridden my trusty 10 speed bike again.

Darren will always have his special time, there is no chance in hell that I plan on conquering the hills that he chooses to subject himself to.
(The picture above clearly illustrates the ridiculous heights Dazza is happy to climb...it's not that I can't, I just choose not to).
I made the comment today that perhaps I could do triathlons, for which Darren reminded me that I am totally incapable of breaking through any pain barriers. It is the reason that Darren also bought a new bike today, a 3 speed cruiser from Wal-mart, just cheap and slow enough for him to be able to go at my pace.... slow.

A cruise along the Embarcadero was my introduction to bike riding in San Francisco. If I had to place this ride on the following scale:
1-------------------2-------------------3---------------4---------------------5
No Sweat..........Easy....................Novice........Intermediate...............Pro

It would definitely have come in at 1 (perhaps even -5). It is only a short matter of time before I conquer California Street which I would place at ..... oh let's say 10.

We walked up California Street on Friday night to go to Top of the Mark Bar. It was my first real hike up the famous hills of San Francisco. I am learning the art of layering. The night started with a chill, but from the time of ascent to reaching our destination I removed 3 layers of clothing... Don't despair I didn't end up looking like I was shooting a Target lingerie commercial ( I so wish I could at least say an Elle intimates shoot but that would just be lying).

It was a nice evening with Champagne and a beautiful view of the "dud side" of the city. We were excited at first that we were showed to prime window seats but shortly realised we had a gorgeous view of suburbia and not a magnificent city skyline.
The walk was well worth it and now we have the expert inside knowledge to request the correct side of real estate next time we visit, perhaps with our first overseas guests... hint hint nudge nudge.

We did have our first house guest this week but he was American, so it doesn't really count. Darren had his first official quarterly sales meeting since his has been employed with the company. So his friend/colleague Todd tested out our new sofa bed before the boys headed off for Mountain View Holiday Inn Express for a few nights.

DRUM ROLL PLEASE......
Smarty Pants Dazza (maybe beginners luck) was awarded the quarterly award for 'Consultant of the Quarter'. A quick way to peeve off your new workmates for sure.

At least he has workmates. I too will have workmates, hopefully in less than two months. I have signed up for a few income raising schemes that I am 'kinda' able to do. I have my first market research gig next week. USD$65.00 to watch new pilot TV shows for 1 1/2 hours, that I can do.

I have also signed up with SF Casting to do extra work. My first job listing I was emailed as soon as I joined was:
Zombies Needed
Special / Male or Female / All Ethnicities / 15 - 100 /

We need lots of individuals interested in putting on cool, ghoulish make-up, walking around like they're dead, and attacking and eating the flesh of living people.

I must have made a real impression.

The following was a job listing posted to the website 5 minutes later but WAS NOT emailed to me specifically, like the one above was:

Cheerleaders / Baseball Promo

Background / Female / All Ethnicities / 18 - 36
Thin, Fit & Attractive Women, Union & Non Union to fit to cheerleader costume sizes 2-6 ONLY. This is a specific size casting; do not submit if you do not fit to size 2-6. You must be available all day Saturday 4/21 from early AM hours to evening hours. Shoot will last 8-10 hours in SF. We will notify you if selected.

Of course I am not going to read into that..... at all. Otherwise, d
epressed I will be and then I will only have alcoholic and obsessive personality to tick off before I become a fully fledged blogger.

Couple of quick shots of our apartment below. Keep in mind we are keeping it simple.
And a shot from the balcony towards the city.

I LOVE A BIRTHDAY

A couple of people have asked me if I was under the influence of a glass or two of wine when writing my last entry, silly question really.
But, I am currently writing this entry without a wine glass in sight so we will see if my style takes a different direction, but this is challenging, after all it's my birthday. (I love a birthday).
So I will attempt say, half an entry before I get my daily dose of antioxidants.

Well its been a two week gap since my last entry, surely that means alot has happened. Correctomundo!!!!
A short trip to Sydney was the focus of the last week and a half. My objective, to witness my best buddy Sammy marry Jonathan... and what a celebration it was.

Sam and I did the typical Bride and Bridal Buddy lead up to the big day; Saturday silly night drinks, hairdresser visit and a very relaxing day spa trip, it wasn't easy but we managed to be pampered for an afternoon.
The big day arrived and the weather wasn't going to let anyone down. There before a backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House the vows were recited, the dotted line was signed and the flower petals were thrown. My dearest best friend was a married woman and I couldn't have been happier for her.The night continued with dinner at Tetsuya's, I am no food critic but it was definitely the culinary highlight of my life. Our expectations were high, in 2006 Tetsuya's was ranked no.5 in the list of the World's Top 50 restaurants. Surely 4 months into 2007 it couldn't have slipped too badly... No Siree!!!!!!!

Every course of our 10 course degustation menu melted in the mouth. A few of my favourites:
  • Sweet Corn Soup with Basil Ice Cream
  • Marinated NZ Scampi with Chicken Parfait & Walnut
  • Ravioli of QLD Spanner Crab with Tomato & Basil Vinaigrette

However, one wedding celebration is never enough, the fun continued the next night with a party at the new in laws house. We were treated to the sounds of Monsieur Camembert, a triple ARIA award winning band. The Age described as... 'a brazen and intoxicating blend of Jazz, Gypsy Swing, Latin & East European influences'. The night was a combination of great music, Jewish chair dancing, candid polaroids, awesome food and exhausting dancing.

The following day the wedding celebrations were over... and it was time for me to fly back to San Francisco.

I arrived home to settle into our new apartment... if only!!!! The last two days we have completed walking marathons. Fitness Experts recommend 10,000 steps per day for calorie control, and if I were to continue walking similar trips as this weekend I will never have to make a single visit to our apartments fitness centre.

Saturday was a walk to check out the sights of Fisherman's Wharf. We didn't have high expectations, we were warned that it really was just a mecca for tourists, and that was correct. But the sea lions hang out at Wharf 39 and they are pretty entertaining. The sea lions moved in after the 1989 earth quake, settled and stayed for us tourists. I hear that the Maritime Museum is worth a visit and a trip to Alcatraz is definitely on the cards, so we will be back to Fisherman's Wharf.

Today was a walk over to the Haight neighbourhood, a visit to the Painted Ladies of Alamo Square, also known as Postcard Row and ending up with a thorough cruise through Golden Gate Park and finished with a circle of sunburn around my lower neck.

A Sunday afternoon in Golden Gate park is quite the experience, Lonely Planet states, "the park has become an informal stage for the city's wacky exhibitionists". A short distance into our walk we encountered the drum circle. An assortment of people playing a mixture of different instruments. Apparently this group meets every weekend from midday to dusk, happily entranced by the sound of their beating drums. I thought it was fun. Darren is not a big fan of the alternate breed, I think his description was, he didn't feel comfortable around the 'fragrant people'.... not sure if he is describing the aroma in the air from the material being smoked or the material being worn. I myself am quite a fan of the slightly more alternate ones....

We ventured further to sit, relax and watch the circle of rollerbladers, skaters and hooler hoopers. It was fun to watch such a mixed group of people engaging in their recreational hobby, I appreciated the dagginess of the event, women in straw hats doing daggy dancing on roller skates, a middle aged man that hasn't left the early eighties pulling some awkward splits manoeuvre on his roller skates, and a spiritual looking asian guy that was very impressive at first with his spin manoeuvre but it got old as it turned out to be his only trick of the trade.

Of course there will be more trips to the park in the future, we plan to suss out the Japanese Tea Gardens, De Young Museum and Hamon Tower.

Thanks to all for my Birthday wishes.... I wish I had a chance to catch up with everyone on my very short visit to Sydney but unfortunately time was short.

Just sipping a nice drop of Napa Valley Red.... hey!! it's my birthday.
